When Red Meets Yellow - Original Abstract In the Style of Diebenkorn and Rothko
Substantial abstract expressionist oil painting depicting the conjoining of red and yellow by American artist Donald Roberts (American, 1923-2015). Red takes up the top of the canvas, slowly turning to yellow. Geometric figures can be seen in the middle of canvas. Roberts, an east coast artist, is heavily influenced by his peers and contemporaries Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn.
Signed "Roberts" lower right and on verso.

This noted lithographer was born in 1923 at Wolfeboro, NH, a painter, sculptor and teacher, he first studied at Boston's Vesper George School of Art. After serving in Europe during WW2, he graduated (1948) from Vesper George where he remained to teach through 1952. In 1952, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and then went on to complete his Masters of Fine Arts (1953) at Ohio State.
Roberts was a prolific artist and, for over 50 years, spent his summer months with his wife, the artist June Roberts, at Rabbit Lodge, their hillside studio on Vinalhaven Island, Maine. Over the course of a long and distinguished career, he exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Roberts' work may be found in private and public collections nationwide, including the permanent collections of the Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown) and the Columbus Museum of Art.
