On offer here is an elegant flip-top piece that folds open with a gate-leg mechanism to serve as a full-size table for games or intimate dining. Then, with good manners, it folds back up to be tucked against a wall as a console table.
Crafted in Michigan by Big Rapids Furniture Mfg. Co., the mahogany piece exemplifies both America’s Midwestern, high-functioning practicality, while it pays tribute stylistically to America’s Federal Style (1780s to 1820s).
Especially attractive are the undulating curves of the front apron. This serpentine shape is a hallmark of high-style Federal furniture, as is the inlay of decorative trim along the apron’s edge and the central urn motif. The latter was likely done in brighter satinwood or maple to work as a focal point amid the dark rich mahogany veneers. Also typical for the era are the table’s slender square legs tapering toward the feet, further contributing to the light elegance of this piece. Some good practical advice: Take it home and put it to work.
