The gentleman you'd want to share a glass of port with.
While most Victorian masculine portraiture delivers a stern lecture from the wall, this fellow offers something far more welcome — a gleam in the eye, a warmth in the expression, and the distinct impression that he's just about to lean forward and share something absolutely delightful. He was clearly the most interesting man at whatever table he graced.
He presents magnificently. Formal black frock coat, crisp white linen shirt, a rakish black bow, and a gold watch fob that catches the light just so. A man of standing, of substance — and if that expression is any indication, of very good stories. The kind you'd hear with the sound of a harbor outside the window.
Painted in rich oils that remain vibrant after 150 years, the work carries a partially obscured artist's signature — appropriately mysterious. The early period frame is beautifully restrained, its clean simple lines as at home in a shingled grey cottage as in a Manhattan townhouse or a proper gentleman's library. A few honest age-appropriate dings speak to a piece that was lived with and loved rather than tucked away. An excellent candidate for light conservation, though he wears his years with the easy confidence of a man who has never once worried about such things.
At 28" × 22", he commands a wall without overwhelming a room.
Discovered at a Nantucket family estate sale — the kind of multigenerational collection where quality pieces were treasured and the good ones always ended up staying.
