Few objects capture the romance of the Grand Tour quite like this — a superb oval shadow box presenting a curated collection of approximately eighteen plaster intaglios, each individually set in its own gilt bezel and arranged in a graceful, radiating composition against a warm linen-toned ground.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, aristocrats and gentlemen completing their classical education through Italy and Greece returned home with precisely these treasures: finely cast plaster reproductions of ancient engraved gems — depicting Roman emperors in profile, mythological figures, gods, and scenes drawn from antiquity. The word intaglio, Italian for "carving," refers to the incised, sunken design, the inversion of the more familiar cameo. These casts reproduced in humble plaster what once existed only in precious cornelian, onyx, and jasper in the great collections of Rome, Naples, and Florence.
This example is particularly fine in its presentation. The casts vary beautifully in size — from small portrait medallions to a commanding central oval depicting a seated classical figure — creating a composed hierarchy that draws the eye inward. Each plaster is cream-white and crisply detailed, set within individual gilt oval frames, all contained behind what appears to be original convex glass. The enclosing frame itself is a substantial oval giltwood molding with lovely age and patina, its layered profile entirely in keeping with the neoclassical period.
At 20 inches tall by 16 inches wide, it is a commanding presence without overwhelming a room — the ideal scale for a library shelf, a study wall, or the anchor of a curated gallery arrangement.
A piece like this is equally at home anchoring a gallery wall, presiding over a writing desk, or displayed in a cabinet of curiosities. It is increasingly rare to find a collection this complete, this well-preserved, and this handsomely framed.
A gentleman's acquisition. A scholar's trophy. A traveler's memory in plaster and gold.
