The composition rises dynamically from a cluster of peony bushes at the base to a swirl of dozens of brilliantly colored butterflies filling the upper field, each rendered in vivid polychrome detail.
The upper left of the painting bears a lengthy inscription in expressive Chinese calligraphy, accompanied by a red artist’s seal (chop). A second red seal appears at the lower right corner of the painting. The work is executed in ink and color on paper.
The scroll is traditionally mounted with a navy/dark brocade inner border and a silver-gray floral silk brocade outer mount — both in excellent condition. The hanging rod is original with black lacquered finials, and the scroll includes its original storage box, covered in a classic gold hexagonal-medallion brocade wrapping.
