A rare and character-rich buffet from the Liège region of current-day Belgium, dating to the early 18th century and firmly rooted in the Régence period. The carving reflects the transition from the symmetry of Louis XIV toward the more fluid, expressive ornament that would define the Louis XV era—lively, sculptural, and full of movement.
The façade is distinguished by exceptional figural panels depicting mermaids, intricately hand-carved and framed beneath draped swags and ornamental cartouches. This unusual nautical motif suggests a personal commission, likely tied to a maritime connection or family symbolism, giving the piece a narrative depth rarely encountered.
The upper frieze is adorned with finely carved scrolling foliage and classical ornament, anchoring the composition with balance and refinement. Throughout, the craftsmanship is deeply cut and confident, characteristic of the skilled artisans working in the French-speaking Liègeois tradition during the Régence period.
Expertly hand-stripped in our workshop, the oak now reveals a soft, natural tone while preserving the beautiful patina developed over three centuries. The finish allows the richness of the carving and the quality of the wood to come forward while maintaining the integrity of the piece.
Substantial and grounded, the buffet provides generous storage behind its paneled doors and serves as a striking focal point—an authentic expression of early 18th century craftsmanship with a story embedded in its very design.
