Finely engraved and beautifully hand-colored mid-18th-century French map depicting the eastern portion of North America at the dawn of the French and Indian War—capturing the region just before large-scale westward expansion reshaped the continent.

Titled Partie de l’Amérique Septentrionale, this important 1755 map illustrates the Ohio River watershed alongside the British colonies of New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Carolinas. The composition reflects European geographic understanding of the interior at a pivotal historical moment, when control of the Ohio Valley was contested between French and British empires.

An inset map at upper left details the Carolina coastline, while the main sheet emphasizes river systems, early settlements, colonial boundaries, and Indigenous territories—offering a fascinating snapshot of North America before the formation of the United States.

Elegant original outline color distinguishes colonial regions, and an elaborate rococo cartouche frames the title in the lower right, typical of Vaugondy’s refined Parisian cartographic style.
