A compelling European, most likely French, devotional sculpture depicting the Madonna and Child, rendered in cast stone or composite cement and presenting with a beautifully aged, timeworn surface.
The Virgin is shown in a serene, prayerful stance, hands gently clasped, her draped robes falling in soft, rhythmic folds. A radiating halo-like surround frames the figure, while the base incorporates traditional Marian symbolism, including a cherubic figure and serpent—iconography associated with the Virgin’s triumph over evil.
The sculpture exhibits a richly developed natural patina from prolonged outdoor exposure, with variegated tones of mossy green, ochre, and mineral accretions that enhance its sculptural depth and authenticity. This weathering gives the piece the appearance and character of earlier European ecclesiastical garden statuary.
Executed in the mid-20th century in the European tradition of devotional garden sculpture, the piece reflects the widespread practice of producing durable cast stone figures inspired by earlier carved stone prototypes found in churches, grottos, and courtyards throughout France, Italy, and Spain.
An incised “FNIA” mark appears to the reverse base, likely a workshop or mold identifier.
A highly decorative and evocative object, ideal for a garden setting, courtyard, or interior installation where architectural and spiritual elements are desired. Particularly well-suited for Mediterranean, traditional, or antique-inspired environments. “Its scale and authentic surface make it especially desirable for designers seeking ready-aged architectural elements without the fragility of carved stone.”
