A striking and deeply personal example of 19th-century “memory ware,” this handcrafted wall pocket is composed of carefully arranged shards of broken ceramics, glass, and china—each fragment once part of a larger story.
Dating to the late 1800s, this piece embodies the Victorian tradition of preserving memories through object-making. Known as “shardwork” or mosaic memory ware, these pieces were often created from sentimental household items—teacups, plates, and decorative wares—transformed into something entirely new rather than discarded.
The surface features an intricate geometric center surrounded by a vibrant patchwork of porcelain fragments, including floral transferware, hand-painted elements, and colored glass. The variation in glaze, pattern, and translucency creates a layered, almost stained-glass effect when light hits the surface.
Mounted as a wall pocket, it was originally intended to hold dried flowers, letters, or keepsakes—functioning as both decor and a vessel for memory.
