English Heraldic Equestrian Shop Sign, Hand-Painted Double-Sided Saddlery Sign, J. Miles & Son
A striking and characterful British hand-painted equestrian trade sign, created in the late 20th century in homage to traditional English saddlery and heritage shop signage.
This large-scale double-sided wooden sign was produced for J. Miles & Son of Dorchester, a historic saddlery firm established in 1622. Rich in heraldic detail, the design draws inspiration from the arms of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers of London, lending the piece a strong sense of history and craftsmanship.
Overview
Decorative and architectural in presence, this is a true statement piece. The sign features a bold heraldic composition with two rearing horses flanking a central shield, surmounted by a helmet and crowned horse crest, all framed by flowing mantling and traditional sign lettering.
The palette of ochre yellow, black, and red creates strong visual contrast, while the hand-painted finish gives depth and texture that only traditional brushwork can achieve.
Double-sided and set within a painted wooden frame, it was originally designed for exterior display, making it particularly impactful when used in an interior setting.
