Very few furniture makers get a revival of their best work a century after their death. Other than France’s André-Charles Boulle, only Great Britain’s Thomas Chippendale (1718–1779) comes to mind. Why? Well, his original vision was to blend English furniture forms with intricate Asian-inspired motifs. And for another thing, he published a book, “The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director” in 1754, sharing his hugely desirable designs in detail—think “open source” software today. Who does that? That’s confidence, with good reason.
For an example, look at this Chippendale-style tea table, which dates to the late 1800s (likely circa 1870-1880), a "Centennial" or "Revival" homage to Chippendale’s mid-18th century work.
Note its elegant proportions, a fixed rectangular top with an upright gallery rail designed to safely hold a tea service or valuable silver. The horizontal apron, or frieze, is decorated with "blind fretwork"—a shallow, repetitive geometric carving that doesn't go all the way through the wood.
Moving down, hand-carved open fret brackets connect to tapered legs with feet shielding the view of tiny brass casters, which add to its convenience over carpets.
In 19th-century homes, such pieces were signs of major social status, used as focal points for formal entertaining or to display fine porcelain. Today, they continue to be valued both as collectors' items and as versatile, timeless decorative accents for entry halls or living rooms.
