Mathurin Meheut was a painter of nature in Brittany, France in the early 20th century. His style is bold, colorful and animated. He did some work for the Henriot Quimper faiencerie, most notably a service, La Mer, in the early 1920s. The service features fish, crabs, an octopus, and shells with a green stripped border. With its Art Deco style and charming portraits of sea life, items from this service are among the most coveted of Quimper faience. The La Mer plate here features two flounders.
