A self-portrait painted in the 1960s depicts the artist in an androgynous, Grecian style. The portrait is painted on metal and fixed to a metal bracket with a wall attachment ring at the top and a candle holder at the base.

Ira Yeager (1938-2022) is known for his whimsical depictions of animals, flowers, 18th-century figures, and portraits. Born in Bellingham, WA, Yeager studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. He developed a deep connection to Bay Area Figurative artists like Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Nelson Bischoff, both of whom were his teachers and strongly shaped Yeager’s work and practice. After traveling and living in Corfu, Greece and New York City, the artist returned to California for good in the 1970s. His work is truly evocative of the spirit of the Bay Area and Napa Valley in particular.

While unsigned, the media, colors, and technique align with works Yeager produced in the 1960s during a nomadic period of his life, when he lived in Corfu, Greece; Tangier, Morocco; New York City; and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
