Morell initially worked in the tradition of Lee Friedlander and Gary Winogrand, photographing street scenes in New York. His interests later shifted to a more intimate yet still pedestrian scale, capturing black-and-white images of domestic objects.

Morell's work is exhibited by such major galleries as Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)|Centre Pompidou|Whitney Museum of American Art|The Metropolitan Museum of Art|National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.|Art Institute of Chicago.
