A sophisticated study in contrast and storytelling, "The Gilded Province" is an exceptional antique sideboard featuring the timeless art of Chinoiserie. This 51-inch console is finished in a rich, multi-layered black lacquer, serving as a dark canvas for a series of intricate, hand-painted gilt landscapes. The doors and lower apron depict traditional mountain peaks, pagodas, and architectural scenes that seem to glow against the obsidian frame. The silhouette is classic and architectural, featuring a protruding top with traditional mitered corners and two pairs of recessed cabinet doors. The original hand-forged circular "paktong" style hardware remains intact, adding a touch of weathered metallic charm to the center of each panel. With a practical 18-inch depth, this piece offers a refined solution for a dining room buffet, an entry console, or a master suite anchor.
As an authentic antique artifact, it possesses a magnificent, age-earned patina. The lacquer shows a delicate "crackle" and softening at the edges, and the gilt work has mellowed into a burnished, warm gold that only time can produce. To maintain its historical integrity, the piece displays visible blemishes and age-cracks throughout the lacquer. Notably, there is a visible vintage repair on the lower section of the right door, a testament to its long life and careful preservation. It is a piece that brings both history and a sense of "Old World" luxury to a modern, global-eclectic interior.
