A fine antique Italian Pietra Dura Grand Tour marquetry stone picture panel, circa 1870.
This very attractive plaque depicts a cavalier standing and taking a drink from a canteen, the figure is finely inlaid on a black marble background and is made up of semi-precious stones.
The figure represents a 17th century cavalier or musketeer, each part of the portrait and the cavalier's outfit is made up of semi-precious stones inlaid by the process of marquetry to create a very life-like figure.
The plaque is housed in the original limewood and gesso frame that is gilded with both gold and silver leaf.
