A rare and well-preserved Kikko Jacket used traditionally as an under armor by elite Daimyo and Samurai class since the time of the Mongol invasions of Japan (1270s), and particularly common from the Nanbokuchō period (1336–1392) until the end of Edo period (1603-1868). The armors in general became confined to ceremonial use in Edo period such as festivals and parades, as the practical use of them for combat in war were by large diminished.
The particular garment type on offer is called Kikko Gane Katabira, which literally means Turtle Shell Single Layer Jacket. It features an indigo-dyed cotton kimono jacket in the shape of Haori with its entire exterior surface covered in small, lacquered hexagon-shaped iron plates. The garment has wide sleeves and large folded lapel along the entire front, likely was worn as an outer layer for ceremonial purpose. The small Kikko plates with sewn onto the surface with blue thread with a subtle geometrical design.
In beautiful condition with attractive patina, this special piece of armor strikes the viewer more as a textile art for its geometrical appearance and superb workmanship. It will make an impressive wall display for any interior space.
