An original 1924 fashion plate from the legendary French periodical Gazette du Bon Ton. This piece, Plate No. 263, is the work of celebrated illustrator Pierre Mourgue. It features two women in a dynamic, expressive pose, dressed in flowing gowns of a striking deep magenta. Mourgue’s signature loose, painterly style perfectly captures the energy and avant-garde fashion of the mid-1920s Parisian elite.
Like all Gazette plates, this was created using the pochoir technique—a meticulous hand-stenciling process that layers rich gouache and watercolor over a lithograph, resulting in the incredibly saturated colors seen here. Personally sourced from a Parisian flea market, this is a genuine 100-year-old piece of fashion history, not a reproduction.
Condition & Presentation:
Excellent vintage condition with remarkably vibrant colors. The paper shows a soft, uniform age-toning that adds to its authentic period character. It is professionally presented in a custom 11" x 14" gold-beveled mat that highlights the rich pinks and blacks of the illustration.
