A compelling and sculpturally expressive Chinese Tang dynasty earthenware figure depicting a mounted rider, created as a funerary object (mingqi) during one of China’s most artistically vibrant periods. The figure portrays a dignified male rider seated astride a caparisoned horse, his posture upright and composed, conveying both status and quiet authority.
The rider is dressed in a simply rendered tunic with incised detailing and a rounded cap, his features softly modeled with a calm, introspective expression characteristic of Tang figural work. The horse stands firmly on an integral rectangular base, its sturdy proportions and gently articulated musculature reflecting the Tang dynasty’s reverence for horses as symbols of power, mobility, and prestige.
Executed in low-fired earthenware, the figure retains traces of its original surface treatment, now beautifully weathered over time. The softly mottled surface, with areas of mineral accretion and worn pigment, speaks to its age and burial history, creating a richly textured patina that enhances its presence and authenticity.
Tang dynasty tomb figures such as this were interred to accompany the deceased into the afterlife, representing attendants, animals, and possessions meant to ensure comfort and status beyond death. Horse and rider figures, in particular, underscore the importance of cavalry and courtly life during the period.
Accompanied by a 2002 invoice from a Chicago dealer identifying the figure as Tang dynasty (618–907 AD), providing useful context for its history within the American market.
This example is notable for its balanced composition, strong silhouette, and evocative surface—an object that reads as both sculpture and artifact, equally at home in a refined interior or a serious collection of early Chinese works.
