Edo Kiriko glass was first produced in 1834 and reached peak popularity during the early 20th century. It is still produced today. Please be aware that the listed “Period Made” is a reflection of this research, as I did not originally purchase the piece and am unaware of the actual origin date.

Traditional Craft: Edo Kiriko
Kiriko refers to cut patterns carved into glassware using abrasives such as grinding stones.
This technique is a traditional craft that has been handed down from the late Edo period to the present day.
Edo Kiriko is created by cutting into two-layered glassware—featuring an outer layer of colored glass bonded to an inner layer of clear glass. This process allows one to enjoy the beautiful brilliance and the striking color contrasts created by the interplay between the colorless, transparent cut surfaces and the surrounding colored glass.
These glass vessels represent a new sensibility in glass artistry; they are hand-blown by skilled craftsmen and embellished with a fusion of traditional Edo Kiriko techniques, unique intricate methods, and original designs.
