Artisans train for years to master its intricacies which require patience, concentration, and skill. The artisan first sketches his design on paper, then pokes tiny holes along the paper outline and uses soot or powder to create a subtle stitching roadmap on the canvas. Once that’s in place he begins laboriously hand-stitching each detail, a process that takes hours, days—sometimes even weeks. The designs are derived from decorative Islamic art found in tiles, carvings and ceramic ware.
While each pillow cover has a distinct design, the blue/red color theme makes them very much a pair. They are 100% cotton with royal blue pieces handstiched onto a vivid red background, and backed with a heavy duty natural cotton, with a finished border of more royal blue. Each piece is nearly 17 inches square, in excellent condition, other than some folds, which can be ironed out. Both have zippered backs to make it easy for stuffing and cleaning.
They were purchased in Egypt back in the 1970s and have been in storage ever since. See less
