The original is currently housed in the Vatican Museum. 'Gradiva' is the title of a 1903 novella by Wilhelm Jensen which involves an archeologist that becomes smitten with an antique sculpture of a woman he names 'Gradiva'. He dreams about her and searches endlessly for her only to realize that she is really his long-forgotten childhood sweetheart. Apparently, Sigmund Freud was also taken by this story and, after a visit to the Vatican, commissioned a copy of the 'Gradiva' to hang in his consulting rooms.. This well executed plaster cast relief measures 13" wide x 27" high x 2 1/2" deep (at the widest point along the base). Overall, the condition is very good however, as with anything delicate and old, there is some wear to both the plaster and the gold painted finish. Please be sure to view the photos carefully.
