Hand-hewn from a single dense hardwood timber and rising an extraordinary 92 inches tall. Traditionally associated with the elevated houses, granaries, and ceremonial morung structures of Naga tribal communities, pieces of this scale and presence served both functional and symbolic roles within village architecture. The striking stylized puma head figure reflects the powerful protective imagery deeply embedded within Naga visual culture, where such animals symbolized strength, guardianship, prestige, and warrior spirit. Along the shaft, the projecting “steps” are highly abstracted bird-head carvings, each with subtly rendered eyes and beak-like profiles emerging from the timber. Bird motifs held important symbolic associations throughout Naga material culture and were often connected to the spiritual world, status, communication, and protection, adding another layer of ceremonial meaning to the piece.
