An unusual and highly decorative French zoomorphic ewer dating to the mid-to-late 19th century, modeled in the form of a duck. The handblown glass body is executed in vivid blue shading, fitted with finely detailed mixed-metal mounts including realistic duck feet and a hinged duck head collar and lid with inset glass eyes.
The form is especially sculptural, with a long curved neck, open beak, and clear applied handle that follows the line of the body beautifully. The richly colored glass and naturalistic metalwork give the piece strong visual presence from every angle, making it equally successful as a collector’s object or as a striking decorative accent.
The ewer is unmarked as to factory, but bears a small apparent “G” mark to the underside of one foot. It is likely French and may be related to the production of Portieux-Vallerysthal.
A rare and memorable 19th-century figural vessel with exceptional display appeal.
