The lid shows the well-known early spring composition … Read more A vintage Soviet Fedoskino lacquer box, hand-painted after Aleksei Savrasov’s Грачи прилетели. The lid shows the well-known early spring composition of bare birches with rook nests, circling birds, melting snow, and a church in the distance.

The box is made of lacquered papier-mâché with a black exterior and vivid red interior, and includes its original fitted presentation box and original factory slip. The label identifies the Fedoskino Factory of Miniature Painting and includes the handwritten notation “Грачи прил.” for Грачи прилетели, along with “Арт. 117-4.” Marked “Made in USSR” on the underside.

Fedoskino is the oldest of the Russian lacquer schools and is known for painting in oil on papier-mâché, often over reflective underlayers such as metal powder or foil. The luminous ground on this example appears consistent with aluminum underpainting. See less
