Elegant large vintage Japanese monochrome painting depicts Carp Leaping. Signed and sealed by artist. This is a classic motif in Japanese art symbolizing perseverance, success, and professional advancement. It is based on the legend that a carp that swims upstream and leaps over the 'Dragon Gate' will transform into a dragon. It is a beautiful example of Nihonga (traditional Japanese-style painting), often displayed to bring good fortune and courage to a household. Watercolor and ink on paper. Beautifully mounted on silk. Lacquered brown wood roller. Paper on back. Previous owner has acquired this piece at an antique auction in Fukuoka, Japan. Japan, early Showa Era, c. 1930-1940s. Very Good condition - some age wear and creases, minimal staining, clean. This scroll can be trimmed and framed.
