This impressive and highly graphic sculptural composition presents an eloquent expression of the complementary roles of male and female partners united in harmony and continuity of life. The elongated carved bodies are rendered as strong parallel vertical forms connected by horizontal elements, visually reinforcing the bond between the couple. The seated pair rests upon a stool supported by three additional smaller couples, emphasizing themes of lineage, community, and generational support. On the reverse, a small child clings to the female figure’s back while a maternal figure appears behind the male, further symbolizing ancestry, protection, and the continuity of family. Additional male and female figures seated upon the larger figures’ knees hold a ceremonial pipe, possibly representing wisdom, aging together, and the enduring relationship between family, nurturing, and provision. Beautifully aged with rich patina and authentic signs of use and age throughout. See less
