A commanding example of organic modernism. This massive 3-inch-thick Redwood slab spans an impressive 65 inches in length, making it a true architectural anchor. Curated for the historic 1955 Hugh Stubbins 'Idea Home,' the table features a spectacular live-edge perimeter and the dense, ruby-amber grain found only in ancient old-growth timber.
Design & Construction:
The slab is currently paired with classic Mid-Century Modern hairpin legs, creating a sophisticated 'heavy-top, light-foot' silhouette that allows the 3-inch mass of the wood to take center stage. The surface is finished in a thick, high-gloss resin that dramatizes the wood's natural 'liquid' depth. While the underside remains unfinished (allowing the wood to breathe), it bears a rectangular residue mark indicating its history as a pedestal-base console—testament to its versatile heritage and potential for future customization.
Condition & Provenance:
The resin coating is structurally sound and has protected the wood for decades, though it shows a fine patina of surface scratches from its long history. It currently stands as a beautiful, 'time-capsule' piece of Pacific Northwest design history.

While the finish is structurally sound and highly reflective, the material has a characteristic 'softness' that has preserved a fine network of surface scratches from its long history of use. Additionally, the table originally had console height hair pin legs. We found it could be the star architectural feature of our living room and switched out the legs to 19”. We have consulted with a professional refinisher regarding the best path forward for top surface of this piece: The 'Refresh' Option: The current sealant is of sufficient depth to be professionally wet-sanded and buffed, which would remove surface imperfections while maintaining the original glossy character. The 'Restoration' Option: For those seeking a total transformation, the resin can be professionally stripped to the raw wood, allowing for a modern matte or oil-rubbed finish. The 'Authentic' Option: As it sits, the table presents beautifully, carrying the honest patina of a well-loved piece of Oregon history. It is ready for immediate enjoyment in its current 'time-capsule' state. less
