Direct from France, an impressive antique Breton cabinet or armoire with bold carvings and a strong visual presence.
The carved detail extends from the open spindle crown throughout the entire cabinet front, with a wide foliate panel above the door and narrow, intricately carved bands flanking the door.

The upper door panel features a stunning large medallion, with ships wheel spindles to the corners and dual carved portraits of Breton figures in period dress.

Below, a full length band of open spindles is framed by more hand carved details above a panel featuring a center Celtic cross design of ships wheels, with matching corner spindles. Note the cabinet sides are also both fully carved, always a sign of superior quality. Well constructed and carved by craftsmen of the period, circa 1890.

Brief note about Brittany Style Antique French Furniture.
The Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France are reflected in the furniture created in this region. The Breton style is distinctive and easily recognizable by its very ornate carving. A hallmark feature is the symbolic use of men and women in traditional regional dress, along with motifs drawn from the area’s maritime culture, including circles and ship’s wheels. Typically, the furniture is carved from chestnut or oak, with a dark finish.
