A stylish pair of antique, fashion lithographs, circa late 19th century, depicting elegant youths in Directoire-era fashion. These images are after early engravings by Philibert-Louis Debucourt (1755–1832), first published circa 1801 in Modes et Manières du jour (Fashions and Manners of the Day), examples of which are held in the Carnavalet Museum collection.
The sole female print portrays a young lady in an Empire-style dress with parasol, a fan and scarf tied under her chin—an elegant expression of upper-class fashion’s embrace of a refined pastoral aesthetic. Behind her, trees and countryside.
The couple print depicts a young gentleman in ‘Incroyable’ fashion—buttoned coat, high collar, yellow breeches, and boots—carrying a knotty wooden stick as part of his eccentric ensemble. Beside him, a woman in an elegant Empire dress, set against a park with strollers and a distant kiosk, captures the vivid style of late 18th-century Paris.
The ‘Incroyables et Merveilleuses’ were a flamboyant Parisian youth subculture (1795–1799), reacting to the Reign of Terror with extravagant, neoclassical attire. Men, like the one shown here, favored oversized coats, high collars, and elaborate cravats, epitomizing the dandy style.
