This 19th century French Louis XVI commode reflects the lasting influence of the Neoclassical style in France following the reign of Louis XVI. With references to classical Greek and Roman architecture, cabinetmakers continued to produce furniture in this style, even decades after the French Revolution. Crafted from figured mahogany, a luxury import favored by French ébénistes of the era, this French Louis XVI commode is topped with an original shaped Sainte Anne marble top, a material noted for its durability and tonal variation.
The commode features three drawers constructed with hand-cut dovetail joinery, a mark of traditional craftsmanship prior to industrial production. Each drawer is framed with polished brass stringing, while cast bronze drawer pulls and escutcheons add just the right amount of sparkle. The original key is not present.
Fluted corner columns and tapered legs reflect the era’s fascination with classical architecture and proportion. The legs terminate in cast bronze sabots, which act as both a decorative element and a practical component designed to protect the piece from wear.
The materials and level of construction speak to the work of a skilled Parisian workshop producing furniture for the rising bourgeois class of the early 1800s, a time when elegance was expressed through craftsmanship and fine materials rather than excessive ornamentation.
This elegant commode would make a grand statement in an entry, and would be equally useful for additional storage in a living room, study, or dining room.
