Delightful Late 19th / Early 20th Century Asian Black Enamel and Gold Leaf Shop Sign.
Likely from a tea shop, probably used as a sign board / menu.
Heavy and deep wood finished in black lacquer with generous gold gilt detailing.
And, notice the charming K-9 dog figure, and the bright red U figure within - very cool.
36" wide by 18" tall by 1.5" deep.
Wire mounted horizontally for gallery display with two cross beams on the reverse for durability. Presents as an artisan item, but built to use.
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
We love Chinoiserie, Campaign, and authentic Asian pieces - especially in black lacquer, gold leaf, relief details, touches of texture - and a look that says old Hong Kong or 19th C. Shanghai.
This sign has it all!
And the dog and red letter images are just the icing on the cake - a fabulous bit of oriental taste that will pair in any fine collection.
Also, we see this not only as a hanging artwork, but - with the correct base - this could be a fabulous tray table as well. Hmmm...
