A striking Mexican Modernism decorative vase designed and handcrafted in Taxco, Mexico by renowned silversmith Emilia Castillo, daughter of master artisan Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo, a pivotal figure in the Mexican silversmithing movement following William Spratling.
This sculptural vessel is executed in solid brass with silver plate and richly inlaid with natural malachite stone, forming a geometric mosaic surface that reflects the bold, organic aesthetic associated with mid-to-late 20th century Mexican silver design. The faceted lower body contrasts beautifully with the textured malachite upper section, embodying the craftsmanship and artistic innovation seen in works by Margot de Taxco, Salvador Pineda, and other leading Taxco designers.
The piece retains its original hallmark:
“Emilia Castillo, Mexico M.R., Plateado, TO-85”, confirming its authenticity and origin within the celebrated Taxco tradition.
Highly collectible and increasingly sought after, works by Emilia Castillo represent a continuation of the legacy established by Los Castillo, blending traditional hand-wrought techniques with modernist design language.
Condition:
Visible wear to the malachite inlay, including surface variation and natural aging. The silver plate shows scratches, patina, and signs of use consistent with age. Overall, a well-preserved vintage example with strong decorative presence.
