This monumental Macassar ebony and brass credenza by Leon Rosen for Pace Collection, custom made for Johnny Carson circa 1970, is a striking example of American modern design at its most sculptural and architectural. Spanning over ten feet in length, the piece commands presence while maintaining an elegant, low horizontal profile characteristic of high-end executive and media cabinetry of the era.
Executed in richly figured Macassar ebony, the case is finished on all sides, allowing it to float effortlessly within a room, ideal for use as a center-room divider, executive desk return, or statement media console. The dramatic linear grain of the Macassar creates a bold, almost graphic rhythm across the façade, contrasted beautifully by substantial solid brass accents and hardware, a hallmark of Pace’s luxurious material palette.
What truly distinguishes this piece is the sculptural carved recess along one side, a rare and intentional design gesture. This concave, scalloped form is not merely decorative, but functional: it is designed to accommodate a round element within a space. Whether used to nest a swivel chair, cradle a large planter or sculptural object, or soften circulation flow in an open-plan interior, it introduces a dynamic interplay between furniture and environment. This detail transforms the credenza from a static storage piece into an interactive architectural element.
The cabinet’s scale and versatility lend it to a wide range of high-end applications. It works equally well as a dining room credenza, buffet, or sideboard; a statement media console beneath a large-scale artwork or television; or in a corporate or creative office as a conference credenza or storage anchor. In larger interiors such as penthouse apartments, gallery-like living spaces, or boutique hospitality environments it can serve as a focal point while subtly organizing space.
Leon Rosen’s work for Pace Collection is celebrated for blending modernist restraint with glamorous materials, often drawing parallels to the Hollywood Regency movement while remaining firmly rooted in Mid-Century and Postmodern sensibilities. This example, with its custom provenance and monumental scale, stands at the intersection of design, architecture, and collectible craftsmanship.
An exceptional and rare piece, both functional and sculptural, designed for a legendary figure and built to anchor a truly elevated interior.
