Striking mid-century modern creamer and covered sugar set designed and manufactured in Taxco, Mexico by the renowned silversmithing workshop Los Castillo, circa 1950s.
This sculptural example of Mexican silversmithing features elegant Bird of Paradise figural handles richly decorated with lapis lazuli and malachite stone inlay. The birds perch gracefully along the rims of the vessels, forming expressive handles and creating a dramatic tropical silhouette characteristic of classic Taxco silver design.
The bodies of the vessels are crafted in hand-hammered silver plate over brass, giving the pieces a beautiful organic texture that reflects light with subtle movement. The covered sugar bowl features two opposing birds forming the handles, while the creamer pitcher displays a single perched bird. The set includes the original matching spoon with bird finial, also decorated with stone inlay.
Produced during the golden era of Mexican modern decorative arts, pieces like this beautifully combine functional tableware, sculptural design, and semi-precious stone inlay. The vivid blues and greens of lapis lazuli and malachite contrast dramatically with the polished silver surface, making this set both a functional serving piece and a striking decorative object.
Ideal for collectors of:
Taxco silver
Mexican silversmithing
Los Castillo silver
mid-century Mexican modern design
stone inlay decorative objects
The set works beautifully as barware, coffee service, or a sculptural tabletop display in luxury interiors.
About Los Castillo – Taxco Silversmiths
The Los Castillo workshop is one of the most important names in the history of Mexican silversmithing. Founded in the 1930s in Taxco, Mexico by the Castillo brothers, the workshop became internationally recognized for producing innovative silver designs that combined traditional Mexican craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics.
Many of the artisans associated with Los Castillo were trained under William Spratling, the American designer widely credited with revitalizing the Taxco silver industry in the early 20th century. After leaving Spratling’s workshop, the Castillo brothers established their own studio and quickly became known for their sculptural designs, stone inlays, and nature-inspired motifs.
Today, pieces by Los Castillo are highly sought after by collectors of Mexican modern decorative arts, particularly examples featuring semi-precious stone inlay, figural forms, and hand-hammered silver surfaces.
