Original British Mid Century 1940s Southern Railway Enamel Target Sign “Dover Priory” – British Railwayana
An original 1940s Southern Railway enamel target sign from Dover Priory Station, Kent. This authentic mid-century railway sign is a highly collectible example of British railwayana, combining historic significance with strong decorative appeal.
Description
This rare Southern Railway station sign dates to the post-war period, when the iconic green and white “target” design became standard across the network. Originally mounted on station buildings or lamp posts, these enamel signs were used to clearly identify stations and guide passengers.
Dover Priory, opened in 1861, is the southern terminus of the South Eastern Main Line and a key transport hub linking London with continental Europe via the Port of Dover. Signs from this location are particularly desirable due to the station’s historical importance.
With its bold typography and classic colourway, this piece functions equally as wall art and as a genuine piece of transport history.
