The Gorham Manufacturing Company was one of the most important American producers of sterling silver and silverplate. Founded in 1831 in Providence, Rhode Island by master craftsman Jabez Gorham, the company quickly became known for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs. Under the leadership of John Gorham, the firm introduced mechanized production methods and expanded its product line, helping establish Gorham as a leader in American silver manufacturing during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
During the height of American silver production between 1850 and 1940, Gorham created some of the most iconic flatware and hollowware designs. One of the most famous patterns, Chantilly, designed in 1895, remains one of the most recognized sterling silver patterns ever produced.
In 1898, many prominent American silver manufacturers were consolidated to form the International Silver Company in Meriden, Connecticut. This organization brought together respected firms such as Meriden Britannia Company, Rogers & Brother, Simpson Hall Miller & Co., and Wilcox Silver Plate Company. These companies continued producing high-quality silver designs that were distributed throughout the United States and internationally.
Today, pieces produced by Gorham and the International Silver Company are highly collectible and are held in major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Dallas Museum of Art.
