This is an antique ceramic jar produced in Tokoname, Japan, dating from the 17th to 18th century. Having endured centuries of time, it carries a quiet yet powerful presence.
Tokoname, located in Aichi Prefecture, is one of the “Six Ancient Kilns of Japan,” alongside Seto, Shigaraki, Bizen, Tamba, and Echizen. With a history dating back to the late Heian period, Tokoname developed a distinctive tradition of high-fired, unglazed stoneware using iron-rich clay. It is particularly renowned for producing large storage vessels such as jars and urns, which were essential to everyday life.
The form of this jar is softly rounded, with a sense of stability and balance. The natural swelling of the body and the slightly constricted, irregular mouth create a subtle rhythm unique to this piece. The deformation around the rim, caused during the firing process, has settled into the final shape, embodying a beauty that transcends intention.
The surface retains a raw, almost unglazed texture, with complex tonal variations ranging from deep brown to darkened hues. These nuances were shaped by the firing conditions and the characteristics of the clay, further enriched by centuries of use and aging. Each mark and irregularity speaks to its individuality, making it truly one of a kind.
Originally used as a functional vessel for storing water, grains, or other provisions, this jar has now transcended its utilitarian purpose. Today, it stands as a sculptural object, quietly occupying space with a sense of stillness. In the spirit of wabi-sabi, its imperfections and traces of time are not flaws, but essential elements of its beauty.
Due to its age, it is not suitable for holding water. It is best appreciated as an object or as a vessel for dry arrangements, bringing depth and calm to any interior.
Please enjoy the unique presence of this piece, shaped by time and history.
