Equine Elegance: Original Pastel of Andalusian Stallion by Leslie Charlotte Benenson
Dated August 20, 1995
This striking original pastel drawing is another wonderful addition from our curated collection celebrating the magnificent equine studies of the renowned British artist Leslie Charlotte Benenson (1941–2018).
Executed on warm, toned paper, this artwork features a highly detailed, dynamic portrait of a majestic, dapple-grey horse shown in an elegant, elevated stride. Benenson expertly layered black charcoal and pastel to define the animal's powerful musculature, using lively strokes of white to beautifully render the horse's dappled coat, flowing mane, and sweeping tail.
The piece is numbered "5870" in the lower left corner. In the lower right, it bears a fascinating handwritten inscription by the artist identifying the specific subject, date, and breed: "Stallion 'Lebrijano' / 20 August 1995 Andalusian Horse". It is elegantly presented in a modern, light wood frame with a wide, dark grey matte.

Historical Context: Leslie Charlotte Benenson (1941–2018)
Leslie Charlotte Benenson was a highly celebrated British artist renowned for her skill across multiple disciplines, working successfully as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker.
Although her formal training was in sculpture at the Regent Street Polytechnic in London, she was a remarkably accomplished draftsman and colorist. Her deep-seated passion for animals led her to become a founding member of the prestigious Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA) in 1979. This specific pastel beautifully demonstrates her exceptional ability to capture the spirit and precise anatomy of different horse breeds.
