Dynamic Equine Study: Original Pastel by Leslie Charlotte Benenson
Dated July 21, 1996
This striking original pastel drawing is a wonderful example of the magnificent equine studies produced by the celebrated British artist Leslie Charlotte Benenson (1941–2018).
Captured on a warm, toned paper, the artwork features a highly energetic, dynamic portrait of a rearing stallion. Benenson utilized expressive, sweeping strokes of dark charcoal and black pastel, expertly highlighting the horse's powerful musculature and sense of movement with subtle flashes of white, blue, and violet.
The piece is numbered "6249" in the lower left corner. In the lower right, it bears a fascinating handwritten inscription by the artist detailing the horse's lineage and the specific date of execution: "Stallion Dans Don Juan [Adevezo x Mondragonesa] 21 July 1996". The artwork is elegantly presented in a modern, light wood frame with a wide, dark grey matte that beautifully complements the earthy tones of the paper.

Historical Context: Leslie Charlotte Benenson (1941–2018)
Although her formal training was in sculpture at the Regent Street Polytechnic in London, Leslie Charlotte Benenson was a remarkably accomplished draftsman and colorist.
Her deep-seated passion for animals—and her exceptional ability to translate their spirit and anatomy onto paper and canvas—led her to become a founding member of the prestigious Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA) in 1979. Throughout her career, she was celebrated for her skill across multiple disciplines, working successfully as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker. This specific pastel is part of a larger curated collection that celebrates her masterful contribution to 20th-century equestrian art.
