Luigi Rossini (1790–1857) 1821 Roman Antiquities Etching – Arch of Gallienus – Framed
This is an authentic early 19th-century copper-plate etching by the renowned Italian architect and engraver Luigi Rossini (1790–1857), published in Rome in 1821 as part of his celebrated series Le Antichità Romane (Roman Antiquities).
This particular plate, numbered T.27, depicts the Arch of Gallienus (Arco di Gallieno) on the ancient Via Tiburtina—one of Rome’s enduring classical monuments. Rossini’s composition beautifully blends architectural precision with romantic atmosphere, reflecting the strong influence of Piranesi while maintaining his own refined sensibility.
The scene is animated with early 19th-century Roman life: an ox-drawn hay cart, goats, and figures moving through the historic gateway, set against the surrounding structures. Two engraved references appear within the plate:
A. Castello dell’Acqua Giulia – the ancient aqueduct reservoir
B. Chiesa di S. Vito – the adjoining Church of San Vito
The plate is fully inscribed:
“Rossini dis. e inc.” (designed and engraved by Rossini)
“Roma 1821”
“T.27”
Printed on laid paper with a strong, crisp impression, this is a genuine period example from the original Roman edition—not a later reproduction.
Professionally presented in a substantial gilt frame with black trim and a deep, richly toned mat, the piece has excellent wall presence and is ready to hang.
A verso label from W. King Ambler – Old Prints & Maps further supports its authenticity and period handling.
