This is finished throughout with new paddings and a new compartmentalized down cushion, now all in a remarkable fresh toile du jouy. The curved back and arm rests are upholstered in a Holly Hunt solid check pattern, matching the background of the toile, as is the French tradition.

A toile du juoy fabric, as you may know, is done with an engraved design on cotton, generally of romantic pastoral scenes. What you may not have known, is that toile originates in the 16th century and was heavily imported from India to Europe until trade prohibitions allowed English and French fabric houses to compete as well. The delightful example we have used here is of a orientalist hunting scene with men on horseback, elephants, dogs, and a wild boar. The great detail in printing completes the charm. See less
