An early religious cage doll figure with warm gaze and a soft smile. French origin, mid to late 18th century.
Crazing and minor paint loss. Some splits in the wood around the torso. Articulating wire arms with wood hands and forearms.
Originally, A Santos was created for use with in-home altars. They were needed in small villages that did not have a priest, as well as for when it was not possible to travel to church, such as during times of war.
