An early religious cage doll figure with soft gazing glass eyes. French origin, mid to late 18th century.
Crazing and minor paint loss. Chipped fingers. The fabric arms do not appear to be original, but were fixed to the original hands and shoulders at some point in the piece's more recent history.
Originally, A Santos was created for use with in-home altars. They were needed in small villages that did not have a priest, as well as for when it was not possible to travel to church, such as during times of war.
