Central European School, second half of the 19th century. The composition, a basket of variegated fruit, with a knife resting on the tabletop and a small butterfly fluttering around it, recalls the painting style of Johann Georg Seitz (1810–1870), the Viennese painter who produced a large body of still lifes featuring flowers and fruit. On the back is a provenance label from the Galleria Alberto Subert in Milan. The work is presented in a late 19th-century gilded frame. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
