This antique Chinese brass vessel began life as a traditional censer, crafted during the late Qing to early Republic period and decorated with finely chased phoenix and mythological motifs.
The heavy brass body, animal-mask handles, and hand-cut repoussé work reflect the era’s altar-metalwork traditions. A later bottom plate allowed the vessel to remain in use, preserving its sculptural form. Today, its broad proportions and commanding patina make it equally compelling as a standalone object or repurposed as a cachepot or planter, offering a substantial visual anchor in a room setting.
Provenance details unknown; acquired directly from a Northern California collection.
