A monumental circa 1640 Dutch armoire cabinet known as a Kussenkast (or cushion cabinet) for its bold, deeply recessed panels … Read more A monumental circa 1640 Dutch armoire cabinet known as a Kussenkast (or cushion cabinet) for its bold, deeply recessed panels made of solid mahogany and ebony with a large molded crown, brass keyhole escutcheons, original iron key and finely carved ornamentation. The interior of the upper section is fitted with two shelves. The larger, middle section has one shelf. The bottom section has two drawers with iron pulls. There is a hidden drawer between the upper and middle sections. The cabinet can be disassembled into four sections for ease of transport and installation. No maker’s mark.

During the Dutch golden age, when Dutch merchants established trading networks around the world, these massive pieces were statements of wealth and status and were displayed in the main rooms of distinguished homes.

Provenance: This piece was acquired from Peter C. Sutton, an art historian specializing in seventeenth century Dutch art and the former Director of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford.
