Dimensions:w: 60 cm d: 50 cm h: 87 cmweight: approx. 20 kilo material: teak wood, metal pierre guariche (1926–1995) was a leading french designer and interior architect who helped define postwar modern design in france. Born in paris into a family of goldsmiths, he trained at the école nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, graduating in 1949, and began his career in the studio of marcel gascoin. From the early 1950s, he distinguished himself with furniture and lighting that combined elegant, minimalist forms with the logic of industrial production, aiming to make well-designed objects accessible to a broader public. His work was presented at major french design salons and produced by manufacturers such as airborne, steiner and disderot.in the late 1950s, he became artistic director for the belgian manufacturer meurop in mechelen, he spent significant time in belgium, which shaped both his professional trajectory and his family life. Later, as he moved increasingly into interior architecture and large-scale projects — including work on the ski resort of la plagne — his life became closely tied to architecture, travel, and teaching.he taught for many years at design and architecture schools, influencing a younger generation of french designers.among his most celebrated designs is the tonneau chair (1953–54), an emblem of french modernism, as well as a series of refined, technically inventive lighting pieces. In 1954, he co-founded the atelier de recherche plastique (arp) with joseph-andré motte and michel mortier, promoting a rational, forward-looking approach to furniture design. From the late 1950s onward, he also worked extensively in interior architecture and large-scale projects, including holiday resorts such as la plagne, and later taught design. Awarded the rené gabriel prize in 1965, guariche is remembered as a key figure in democratizing modern design through functional clarity, technical innovation, and understated elegance.
