Edo era Japanese woodblock print of noble woman (kabuki actor) in kimono by Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825). The noble woman depicted is the onnagata actor Nakamura Matsue in the role of Tonase. This is an original antique print from 1816 and has been newly framed. This woodblock print can be found in the Ukiyo-E.org database.
ARTIST: Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) was a famous artist of the Golden Age of ukiyo-e woodblock printing. He is known for his prints related to the kabuki theatre, in particular his yakusha-e actor portraits, a field which he took to new heights. At the age of 14, he became an apprentice of Utagawa Toyoharu (1735-1814), the founder of the Utagawa school. After his master’s death, Toyokuni I became the second head of the Utagawa school. His most famous pupil was Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1864), which adopted the name Toyokuni III in recognition of his master in 1845.
