Plate from Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, Tome III – Pl. 9, p. 228 This finely engraved copperplate presents a comprehensive anatomical study of the head and brain, integrating muscular dissection with cranial and cerebral sections. The plate comprises five figures, each illustrating a progressive stage of anatomical exposure and structural analysis. Figure 1 displays the head in frontal view with the superficial facial muscles exposed. The musculature of the forehead, eyelids, cheeks, lips, and chin is meticulously delineated, revealing the complex arrangement responsible for expression and mastication. The platysma and anterior cervical structures descend into the neck, where the trachea and associated tissues are partially visible. The precise rendering of muscular fibers, achieved through delicate parallel line work, emphasizes both direction and volume. Figure 2 presents the head with the calvarium removed, exposing the superior surface of the brain. The cerebral hemispheres fill the cranial cavity, separated by the longitudinal fissure. The meningeal and vascular impressions along the inner skull are subtly indicated, while the neck musculature remains visible below, situating the brain within its anatomical context. Figure 3 shows a lateral view of the head with the cranial vault opened to reveal internal cerebral structures. The corpus callosum, ventricles, and deeper midline formations are illustrated in profile, demonstrating the layered organization of the brain. The juxtaposition of facial musculature and intracranial anatomy underscores the integration of superficial and deep systems. Figure 4 isolates a median sagittal section of the brain, clearly depicting the cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem, and ventricular cavities. The internal architecture is rendered with refined cross-hatching to distinguish neural tissue from surrounding structures. Figure 5 presents the brain removed from the skull in lateral aspect, highlighting the convolutions of the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum beneath. The proportional modeling and tonal gradation provide a strong sense of three-dimensional form. Executed with clarity and balance, the engraving exemplifies eighteenth-century anatomical illustration, uniting scientific precision with compositional harmony. The numerical annotations correspond to explanatory references in the accompanying text, reinforcing the plate’s pedagogical and scholarly purpose.
